Experiments with the ABI (accents of the british isles) speech corpus

چکیده
The ABI (Accents of the British Isles) speech corpus contains approximately 90 hours of speech from approximately 280 speakers representing 14 different regional accents of British and Irish English. ABI includes a combination of applicationsoriented and linguistically-motivated material. This paper describes experiments in which the ABI corpus is used to study the effects of these regional accents on vowel formant frequencies and automatic speech recogniser performance, and to explore inter-accent variability

Computer and Human Recognition of Regional Accents of British English
This paper is concerned with classification of the 14 regional accents of British English in the ABI (Accents of the British Isles) speech corpus. Results are reported using a state-of-theart Language Identification system, variants of Huckvale’s ACCDIST system, and human listeners. The best performance, 95.18% accuracy, is obtained using the textdependent ACCDIST measure. The performance of a ...
متن کاملAutomatic Dialect Identification: A Study of British English
This contribution deals with the automatic identification of the dialects of the British Isles. Several methods based on the linguistic study of dialect-specific vowel systems are proposed and compared using the Accents of the British Isles (ABI) corpus. The first method examines differences in diphthongization for the face lexical set. Discrimination scores in a two-dialect discrimination task...
متن کاملFormant frequencies of vowels in 13 accents of the British Isles
This study is a formant-based investigation of the vowels of male speakers in 13 accents of the British Isles. It provides F1/F2 graphs (obtained with a semi-automatic method) which could be used as starting points for more thorough analyses. The article focuses on both phonetic realization and systemic phenomena, and it also provides detailed information on automatic formant measurements. The ...
متن کاملIntonational Variation in the British Isles
Models of intonation are typically based on one dialect and one style and do not account for interor intra-speaker variability. Speech data from the IViE corpus, however, demonstrate considerable variation in English intonation that occurs both across and within dialects (IViE = Intonational Variation in English, UK ESRC award R000237145, http://www.phon.ox.ac.k/~esther/ivyweb). In this paper, ...
متن کاملAcoustic model selection for recognition of regional accented speech
Accent is cited as an issue for speech recognition systems [1]. Research has shown that accent mismatch between the training and the test data will result in significant accuracy reduction in Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems. Using HMM based ASR trained on a standard English accent, our study shows that the error rates can be up to seven times higher for accented speech, than for stan...
